Netflix has announced a new anime movie called The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. This news follows the news that The Witcher may be the most-watched first season of all Netflix series, with 76 million households watching the new series within the first few weeks of release.
The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf is apparently not going to explore the story of Geralt, the protagonist of the Netflix series. Instead, Nightmare of the Wolf tells the story of Vesemir: “Long before he became Geralt’s mentor, Vesemir himself set out as a witcher after the mysterious Deglan claims him through the Law of Surprise.” The upcoming anime described the plot as follows: “The world of The Witcher expands in this anime film where a new threat comes to The Continent.” What this new threat is, is yet unclear.
The team behind the upcoming movie includes the developers of The Witcher Netflix series Lauren Hissrich and Beau De Mayo, and Studio Mir, the Korean studio behind The Legend of Korra. There is no news yet on the casting. So it is yet unclear if Theo James, the Divergent actor who voiced Vesemir in the game series, will also take on that task for the film. They could also go with Kim Bodnia who will play Vesemir in the upcoming season 2 of The Witcher.
No release date or timeframe has yet been given for The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, so it’s unclear whether it’ll be before or after The Witcher’s second season on Netflix. Netflix did create a page for The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf and on one of the Netflix portals someone noticed that the 2D anime has a playing time of 1 hour and 21 minutes.
Netflix has been working on several projects that should launch a true franchise after season one of The Witcher. In addition to the second season is now being recorded, the prequel miniseries The Witcher: Blood Origin is also being worked on.
