Warner Bros. and HBO Max just revealed the first full trailer for the rebooted Mortal Kombat movie — and, much like the games it’s based on, the upcoming film looks to be very violent. Actually, there were 2 trailers released with one being the gory version. We, of course, included the gory one for you.
In the film we follow MMA fighter Cole Young. He is hunted by Emperor Shang Tsung, who sends Sub-Zero (one of his best warriors) to Earth. Fearing for the safety of his family, Cole seeks help from Jax, who bears the same strange dragon mark as he does.
The film features characters Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim), Cole Young (Lewis Tan), Kung Lao (Max Huang), Mileena (Sisi Stringer), Kano (Josh Lawson), Shang Tsung (Chin Han), Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), Jax Briggs (Mehcad Brooks) and of course Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada).
We know Mortal Kombat as a game series, of course. The first game is from 1992 and was released as an arcade game. The most recent part (Mortal Kombat 11) was released in 2019. The common thread is always the same: a wide variety of fighters from eighteen different realms compete against each other in an epic tournament. Looks perfect for a movie script, which was tried before.
In 1995, Paul W.S. Anderson made the first film adaptation. Two years later Mortal Kombat: Annihilation followed. Both films were a little disappointing. Fortunately, Warner Bros. and HBO are giving it another try! This time Simon McQuoid is at the helm. This newcomer gets help from producers James Wan (The Conjuring films, Aquaman) and Todd Garner (Into the Storm, Tag).
And there is good hope that the film will turn out decent. The first images of the characters look hopeful and the fight scenes seem decent so far.
The release is set on April 16 on HBO Max and probably also in cinemas around that time.
