Netflix is making a six-part prequel that takes place twelve hundred years before the events that were seen in The Witcher. The Witcher: Blood Origin is about the creation of the first Witcher and the events that lead to the coalescence of the worlds of monsters, humans, and elves.
Declan de Barra, who previously wrote one of the eight episodes of The Witcher and also composed music for the series, will lead production of the prequel.
The series is based on the fantasy books of the Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski. Three games were also made of the books, which collectively sold more than 33 million times.
Sapkowski will assist De Barra and the other producers in the making of the new series. “It’s great that The Witcher’s world is getting bigger,” says the writer. “I hope it will bring even more fans.”
The story of The Witcher centers on monster hunter Geralt (played by Superman actor Henry Cavill) who tries to find his place in a world where people seem to be crazier than monsters. Actresses Anya Chalotra and Freya Allan can also be seen in the series. They play the characters Yennefer and Ciri.
The series premiered in December 2019. A second season was announced at the end of 2019, but due to the corona crisis, it is not yet clear when it will be shown on Netflix.
